A Vintage View of Homekeeping

There’s no place like home January 16, 2008

We’re in the process of looking for a new house. It’s been a few years since I have done this but things haven’t changed much; we scour the online search engines, find possible houses and send those to our agent. The process isn’t much different than searching for a used car but the value of what we seek is certainly more. Not just in financial terms, but in quality of life terms. Each house we see has to be evaluated, measured, imagined as our home. Could we be happy here? Could this kitchen make cooking a pleasure or a chore? Is this family room warm and cozy or dark and isolated? Can I picture my family here?

The process is daunting but the reward is worth it. We hope that we’ll find a place that is as close to perfect for us as we can hope to find (in our price range anyway). I hope I’ll walk in the door and I’ll just know. I want to walk in and think “I’ve come home”.

I am pretty sure I will never move again. We started this house…weird place….in 1989 in hopes of retiring here. That came us fater than planned. It is huge, ugly on the outside, has the oddest entry (inside the garage), but I have never been more comfortable or felt so at home before. I don’t envy your search but it is a buyers market and you should do well. Have fun!!

Here’s hoping you find the perfect new home. The Catholic in me wants to haul out St Joseph and ask him to give your family some support in this effort. So I’ll do just that, ‘k?

It occurs to me that modern day realtors have an interesting job now that most customers can and do scour the internet looking for homes that interest them. Our realtor, great gal, basically waited for us to send house listings to her. Instead of schlepping us to places she thought we’d like, she let us do our internet searching to tell her what we wanted to see. Times, they are a changin’.

The times are indeed changing, but as rosemary pointed out,it IS a buyer’s market..While you continue to scour the internet, don’t forget to make your real estate agent earn her commission by listening to your needs, and doing a lot of the legwork involved in placing you in your dream house..Good Luck kimberly!

Don’t forget to take a shower in it first. People always overlook that all too important aspect of house hunting. Best of luck to you!

Somewhere in New England there is a big white house wondering where I am.

Hello! Just wanted to let you know that I replied to your comment on my Avatar blanket pattern (since you wouldn’t have been emailed a notification, I don’t think). Thanks for the question!
